I am not an advocate for defunding the Police, If our board of trusties would properly govern and budget our department then they deserve our money to support a 1 man part time Community policing officer, not 5 and a Chief who is reckless, come back with a proposal for 1 officer and a realistic budget proposal and I would be more than willing to help, but to try and sneak in a vote in May were voter turn out is way lower than November elections, is a dirty way of doing politics, they knew in May of 2020 that they had budget issues and were robing our general funds. Not to mention our Township Supervisor is as much to blame in this, but for some reason they voted him back in, If you want a better community, 1 you need to vote and 2 you need to be educated on who and what you are voting for, not just because he/she is Republican, Democrat, or Non Party and especially NOT by name recognition, people please do your research.
This whole web site is my opinion.
GAINES TOWNSHIP MOSQUITO CONTROL ASSESSMENT Shall each parcel of real estate in the Township upon which there is located a residential dwelling, commercial building, or industrial building be assessed the sum of up to thirtyfive dollars ($35.00) per year per commercial unit, industrial unit, dwelling unit or mobile home site on each parcel for each of the five (5) years from 2021 through 2025, inclusive, to fund the costs of spraying, abating or controlling mosquitoes?

Our board of trusties can not keep our police personal from breaking the law, they refuse to take disciplinary action when an officer breaks the law or acts improperly, why pay for a department that has been miss handled and misused over the last 10 years. If you look at the stats our crime rate has stayed steady over the past 10 years since employing Chief Schmitzer .

If you are worried about coverage, you need not to worry, our prior part time officers spent more time sitting in the office then out on the road, also we can make a deal with neighboring communities (Metro Authority and Argentine Township). We already receive coverage from the Michigan State police and Genesee County Sheriff (mainly MSP). They want you to pay approximately $900, 000 for Policing over the next 5 years. Also $450,000 for Mosquito control over the next 5 years.
“If a state police car is available, then it will respond to the call if they’re available” he said. “They’re the only ones available. The sheriff does not have road patrol so the sheriff will not respond to calls in a community they don’t have a contract with.”
What you need to know is the State Police has always covered Gaines Township, and actually provide more daily service hours in our township 2 to1, meaning on average The State Police cover our Township on average 16 hours every day, but are available 24 hours a day, our part time department spent a lot of time at the town hall not patrolling our streets daily, Our Board of trustees can subcontract to Genesee County, Metro Authority and Argentine. But If you call 911 it goes to the State Police, but the fact is they can and will dispatch Metro Authority or Argentine Police if a sever call arises (rare around here).
The township can’t afford them, so the Gaines Township Police are out of a job. For now.
They turned in their equipment last week and now state police are fielding Gaines township calls.
The only way to reinstate the Gaines Township Police is through a millage in May that could bring back their funding.
“If the millage fails, I will assist the township in shutting down the police department in eliminating equipment. And when that’s done, I will be done,” said Police Chief Mark Schmitzer in an interview with TV5 on April 1.
This is a big decision for any community and plenty of other mid-Michigan communities have been through the same thing as Gaines township, like in Atlas Township. In the 90s they disbanded their own police force and now they contract with the Genesee County Sheriff.

Gaines Twp. to hire firm to investigate complaints against chief
Township will not hold the Chief responsible and have meeting behind closed doors on his discipline and then go ahead and clear him, giving no information to residents. Source: https://swartzcreekview.mihomepaper.com/articles/gaines-twp-to-hire-firm-to-investigate-complaints-against-chief/

Also remember in 2013 he quite to force the Trustees to give him his way at which point he came back and since then he has been his own boss with the Trustees not holding him responsible to his inappropriate behavior and law breaking behaviors.
Facts&My opinion
We had a one man department under Chief Seyfried for about 10 years before Chief Schmitzer was hired in 2011. During Schmitzer’s tenure is when budgetary and financial mismanagement began. Many are opposed to the millage for that very reason especially when the board tried to pass a police assessment (200% increase) without a citizen vote in 2019. The public submitted referendum petitions which forced it to a vote where it failed 3/1.
